Use an asset-based approach that enables parents to gain the information, confidence and the skills they need to find their own way forward.
2. Relationship-based
Develop trust between everyone involved - parents, volunteers, coordinators and local professionals.
3. Reciprocal
Ensure that everyone affected by the programme feels their voice is heard and that they contribute to and benefit from being a part of the programme.
4. Evidence based but adaptive
Root your programme in evidence of what works and base it on a theory of change (downloadable example below). You will need to reflect, innovate and adapt to suit what works locally.

Be aware of the distinctive roles of professionals and volunteers and how the roles will cooperate to achieve shared outcomes.
6. Clear about parameters
The aims and boundaries of your programme should be clearly articulated and understood by parents, professionals and funders.
